Sculptures by Menashe Kadishman

Menashe Kadishman is a famous Israeli artist, who often challenged and surprised audiences. He is best remembered as the sculptor and painter who created a great variety of sheep images in different styles. Kings gallery has a big collection of artworks by Menashe Kadishman, including multiple paintings and sculptures.

“The shepherd”

Kadishman‘s works are full of references to Holy books. The images of grazing flocks and shepherds appear in his art due to the experience as a shepherd in a kibbutz in his youth. A kibbutz is a collective Israeli community, traditionally agrarian. Sculpture “The shepherd” impresses with its subtlety. All figures are connected and form a unified streamlined black creature. So, the silhoutte reminds of a shadow on the hill. Somewhat sinister shepherd seems to pull the sheep. Furthermore, heroes look like bending over in the space.

“The flutist”

Although the form of “The flutist” is naive, the female figure looks elegant. Moreover, naturalness and wildnness create the atmosphere of calm and detachment. Musician is shown as a nymph inhabiting the nature. In particular, her hands form a likeness of a flute. She is a music herself, magical essence who creates harmony. Together with fairy “Birds” the flutist is suggestive of the spring, love and joy. Reminiscent of colibri, the birds make a climate of weightlessness. It seems that viewers are fortunate to see a unique miraculous istant.

“Horse”

Menashe Kadishman depicts the “Horse” in motion. Even though it is unpropotionate and seens unstable, the sculpture inspires perception of resilience and confidence. Also, finesse of forms adds feeling of immmediacy of the shown moment. Specifically, the sculptor managed to model a character of speed and aspiration to movement. As he believed: “art grows from feelings and not rational calculations alone”.
