“Preparations for the celebration on Mount Meron” (Butcher) by Zvi Malnovitzer

The details of “Preparations for the celebration on Mount Meron” (Butcher)

Zvi Malnovitzer is an expressionist Israeli artist, well known for depictions of Jewish life scenes. Butcher is focused on the preparations for the Lag BaOmer celebration on Mount Meron. Red fiery colors make the painting tense and a bit sinister. The artist is using multicolored palette with tints of yellow, red, green, blue and orange. Zvi Malnovitzer illuminates the art work by the combination of reflections, but all lights are subdued. However, at the same time it seems, that the rear wall is burning.

Moreover,

We feel subjective emotions of the author. In particular, the painter precisely reproduces the burden of the butcher. As everything is fiery, it seems like it is hot inside, even though it is a basement.

Although

The painter shows the situation from the outside position, viewers psychologically participate. Interestingly, the expressive and emotionally dense work forms the spiritual space around the figure. The combination of blood and fire bewitches.

Speaking about the plot,

The depicted energy of the flame has special meaning. Mount Meron is famous due to the tomb of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai.  Leading up to the anniversary of his death on Lag BaOmer many people come to his tomb and camp around. Furthermore, on Lag BaOmer itself, hundred of thousands make pilgrimages to celebrate the occasion. Many bonfires are lighted on Meron on that day. Lag BaOmer is the day on which the plague that killed Rabbi Akiva‘s 24,000 disciples came to an end.
