“Arad Camel Trainer” By Reuven Rubin

Please find details of “Arad Camel Trainer

In 1912, Reuven Rubin arrived in future Eretz-Israel, which was still the part of the Ottoman Empire. The painter later wrote, that when he got off the ship in Jaffa, he realized that this was his land, where he would live. Rubin is famous for the local landscapes and the images of people, which he created with the Zionist enthusiasm of the early years.

Camel and its trainer impress with the grace. The animal is full of power and dignity. Especially the head and look convey its pride and a pursuit of freedom. The man is cunning, he has subordinated the camel, that is staying on knees now. Although the animal is captured, the deep bending of the body and slightly upturned head reflect its attitude.

Moreover,

There is only a limited number of sandy colors in the artwork. The main focus is on the precision of transmitted movements and emotions. Particularly, the artist thoroughly showed the posture of the trainer, the turn of his head and arms enslaving the neck. Moreover, due to still popular authentic eastern clothes, the painting is out of time and period.

Rubin conveys the idea, that the perception of history in the East is very unique. It influences the everyday life and is very vibrant. The author has chosen such a place as Arad on purpose, as it is a small city on the border of the Negev and the Judean Deserts. Each stone there is full of history, but the life has never stopped and it is still vivid. Trainers work with camels looking the same as many centures before.
