Anna Ticho is an Israeli landscape painter, who is additionally well known due to her house-museum in the center of Jerusalem. Kings gallery is only seven munutes walk away from this beautiful historic building with a picturesque garden.

Anna Ticho was born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Brno. In November 1912 she married her cousin Dr. Abraham Albert Ticho (1883–1960). From the day Anna arrived in the Holy city till the day she died in 1980, the painter lived in Jerusalem, portraying its alleys and hills.

The artist later described her fascination with “the grandeur of the scenery, the bare hills, the large, ancient olives trees, and the cleft slopes … the sense of solitude and eternity.”

Anna Ticho bequeathed her beloved house to the Israel Museum for the benefit of Jerusalemites.

 Jerusalem hills

The artist is famous for the depictions of the Jerusalem hills. Her drawings convey her love to the city and its inhabitants. For instance, her pencil sketch “Hills” shows endless calm view, she renders the landscape. Her works and the image of Jerusalem are very personal, not hisroical or symbolic. She worked in the way, that captivated her, never looking at the orientalist trends of the Bezalel Academy. During her artistic career Ticho combined techniques of different epochs. She was influenced by Romantic artists and many masters, that she encountered during her time in Vienna, including Albrecht Dürer and Pieter Brueghel, together with Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka.
